Beyond The Familiar
Mehdi’s choices had to be practical and safe because his life was shaped by necessity. As the youngest of two children raised by a single mother, he never considered artistic expression a realistic path. The limits of his world were inherited from his upbringing.
Photography became a way of moving beyond those limits. What began as his first creative outlet gradually became a way of understanding the world through direct experience. Photographing places and people became a reason to walk further, look longer and remain open to what would otherwise pass unnoticed.
His work is built around a simple idea:
We can move beyond the limits of the world we inherit by choosing to pay attention to it.
Photography is not used to explain the world, but to experience it.
Rather than working from predetermined concepts, Mehdi photographs instinctively. Only later, through editing, do recurring ideas begin to emerge. Those ideas form the different chapters of Beyond the Familiar, an ongoing body of work built from years of observation.
I - In Plain Sight
In Plain Sight explores the relationship between light, color, people and their environment. Each photograph is built around the balance between these elements rather than any single subject.
II - Passing By
Passing By focuses on people and the ways they go about their life. The project observes gestures, expressions, and interactions that reveal the many ways we occupy public space.
III - Are You Still Awake?
A different world emerges once daylight disappears. Are You Still Awake? is the result of years of walking through the night without destination.
